Challenges We Faced
- Continuous Operation: The college's large student and staff population required a continuous dining service, making it imperative to minimise downtime during the kitchen refurbishment.
- Space Limitations: The available space for the temporary kitchen was constrained, demanding a strategic approach and specialist lifting contractors to allow for essential cooking facilities, storage, staff change and wash-up areas.
- Compliance Concerns: Adhering to health and safety regulations was paramount, requiring meticulous planning and execution to guarantee a hygienic and safe temporary kitchen environment.
- Environmental: The college's new kitchen is part of a redevelopment project to replace gas-powered appliances with electrical appliances that have less CO2 emissions and a greener carbon footprint, the temporary kitchen had to fall in line with these environmental targets.
Our Approach
- Customised Modular Design: Our team engineered a modular kitchen solution tailored to the college's specific needs, optimising the available space for efficient food preparation, cooking, and service.
- Rapid Deployment: To minimise disruption, a swift deployment strategy was employed, ensuring the temporary kitchen was operational promptly, allowing for a seamless transition from the existing facility to the temporary setup.
- Regulatory Compliance: Collaboration with planning and building control was prioritized to ensure the temporary kitchen met and exceeded all necessary regulations, guaranteeing a safe and hygienic food preparation environment.
- CO2 Reduction: All electric three-phase cooking appliances were supplied with a specialist extraction system to catch the grease and smells using specialist filters and UV light modules.
Implementation
- Timely Installation: The modular kitchen was installed within a short timeframe, allowing the college to sustain its food service operations without any significant interruption during the early stages of the refurbishment project.
- Staff Training: Comprehensive training programs were conducted for the college staff, covering the operation and maintenance of the temporary kitchen equipment. This ensured a smooth transition and empowered the staff to manage day-to-day operations effectively.
- Ongoing Support: A dedicated support system was established, providing continuous assistance and prompt resolution of any issues that arose during the refurbishment process, ensuring the reliable functioning of the temporary kitchen.
Results
The successful deployment of the temporary modular kitchen not only met but exceeded the expectations of the college.
Continuous and uninterrupted food service was maintained throughout the kitchen refurbishment, demonstrating the efficiency and adaptability of a tailored modular solution.
This project highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach, custom design, and swift deployment in ensuring a seamless dining experience for students and staff during essential facility renovations.
